Configuration

General
Configuration of the dock is very easy. At the first start ever you are offered a list of themes to choose from. This allows you to start easily and you can then modify the config to build your own themes and save them for later use.

If you decide to try another theme just right click on the dock and select Cairo-Dock/"Manage themes". You will be able to select a new theme from the list (the dock will also offer to save your current theme if it needs to)

To configure the dock, right click on it and select "Cairo-Dock" and "Configure". A window will appear organized in tabs. Each one represents a group of common properties.

Note: at the bottom left there is a button which allows you to toggle between Simple or Advanced mode.

Each tab contains parameters. After Validating or Applying the changes the dock will reload automatically with its new config.

Each parameter is mouse sensitive so just hover you mouse over it to see a full description.

Here is a brief description of each tab:

    - Position: This tab will allow you to precisely position the dock on the Desktop. It is also here that you configure if the dock will auto-hide when not in focus

    - TaskBar : Allows you to control just about every aspect of how the icons for the application you have launched will appear and behave in the dock.

    - System: This tab controls all sorts of visual effects at the icons and dock level. This includes speed at which the sub dock will appear/disappear and also how the background image will react as the mouse hovers over the dock.

    - Applets: Here you can activate or deactivate an applet and also configure it

    - Background: Control the background of the dock (will it be an image or a color grade?). It is also here that you set the image you want when the dock goes in Hide mode (function Auto-hide)

    - Icons: this is the place to configure the way icons will behave (their size, their reflection, the effect applied when clicked and much more...). Each section of the dock is independent (Launchers Applications, Applets, Separators)

    - Views: Select the view that you want to apply to the dock and sub docks. So far there is Default (flat dock), 3D Plane (perspective), Carrousel (arrange the icons in a 3D ring) and Parabolic (align the icons according to a vertical parabolic)

    - Dialogs: Control how the different notification options of the dock will appear.

Icons
Move a icon in the dock

Nothing easier, just click on the icon and drag it to its new position.

Another way is the right click menu, choose "Move this icon" wich contain a sub-menu.
In this sub-menu, you can:
    • move the icon once to the left
    • or move the icon once to the right
    • or place it in the first position
    • or at the end

These methods are valid for launchers, applications, and applets but different types will not mix (you can move a launcher in the application section!).

You can also modify the order of launchers by their control panel. This time choose "Modify this icon" and select "Extra Parameters" and change the Order value.

Icon naming

You can either :

  • give a complete path to the image (Eg: /path/to/image, or ~/path/to/image).

  • give a picture name only.

That is the case for all the system launchers. In fact those launchers don't even specify any image extension !
To find its way, cairo-dock knows several icons' directory.

They are indicated in the conf file, and you can add as much as you want. The order of the directory will be taken in account when looking for icons. It's useful when you have installed themes, wich contain an icon set.

You can change an icon theme in 2 seconds without touching the launchers !

If the image name doesn't have an extension, Cairo-dock look for .SVG (vectoriel image, much better rendering when and SVG is done well) in priority, then .PNG, then .XPM.
Other extension aren't searched, because an icon without transparency is not very attractive
If cairo-dock doesn't find an icon, you will have an empty space in its place in the dock, but the launcher is still present and functional.

Note: Cairo-Dock support all types of format, but the most attractive are SVG, PNG, et XPM. The SVG have a graphic rendering significantly higher than others, it is therefore preferred.
