Hello, new Cairo Dock user (OpenSuSE 13.2). Really like this app, am setting it up to completely replace my taskbar, notification area, etc.

I am running 2 monitors (1 large desktop), and after starting Cairo Dock, I setup it up the way I wanted, picked a theme and locked everything in place.

Then I went to my second monitor and did the same thing, although I picked a different theme for the second instance of Cairo Dock, chose different options and programs, etc., locked everything in place. Then I shut down my pc for the night, when I came back the next day, both Cairo Docks were on the main monitor stacked on top of each other, and both had the same theme and icons as the first dock I setup.

I have seen MANY posts on here about people not wanting multiple instances of Cairo Dock running, well this is exactly what I do want. Is there a way for me to tell each instance to use a different configuration file, so that when I restart my pc each individual dock stays on it's appropriate screen with it's appropriate adjustments made?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello.

Since cairo-dock uses a default config directory to store it's data opening the 2 different instances of cairo-dock would just write to the same location. What you will probably need to do is create a config directory (or 2) and start one instance (or both instances) of cairo-dock with the 'cairo-dock -d' command (like cairo-dock -d cairo-dock.left and cairo-dock -d cairo-dock.right) so you get 2 different config directories. You would then probably need to create or edit the autostart for your login to start 2 instances of cairo-dock using the -d option.

You may need to be aware of applets that use locked data (not sure which ones if any) as they may conflict each other. It probably won't be an issue unless you have an applet that uses a resource that can't be shared (maybe mail or other login type applets) on both screens. If you separate your instances of cairo-dock into logical functionality (i.e have certain applets on one screen and other applets on another screen) then you probably won't see any issues.

I have never tried this so it may not work as expected but worth a try.

BrianW,

Thanks for the input, will try a little later and report if this works. This is kind of what I was looking for, new to Cairo Dock, but figured there had to be a config selection option to use. As for conflicts, should not be an issue as I am placing different functions on each dock, hence the need for different multiple docks.

Thanks again.

Hello,
I think, I have a really similar problem. So I tried by myself with the tip above.
But then my whole system didn't work anymore...

Now my system ist working again, it is: Linux Mint 17.3 KDE 64-bit.

I am really new to Linux (coming from Windows 7) and also really new to Cairo-Dock.
And sorry, my english is not sooo good... If you could answer in german, it would be great :-)) If not, I will try my best!

Please help me with my Cairo-Dock-problem. It is exactly, what I need as a dock.

What do want with it:
There should be 4 docks at different edges on the desktop (1 at the right edge, 1 at the left, 1 at the top and 1 at the bottom edge).
The right, left and top one should have the same settings. The one at the bottom should have different settings (it should not show opened programs or opened files).
All 4 docks should be visible and work, when I start my linux-system.

What did I do since now:

  • I made one dock at the right edge (with OpenGL). From there, I added one at the left side and one at the top side. I configurated all and as last step I went to "themes" > "save" in the configuration-window, gave it a name and clicked on "Do it" (german: "Anwenden") at the bottom of the configuration-window.

  • Then I wrote in the Terminal "cairo-dock --dir /path/to/dir" to create a completely new dock with different settings (it should not show opened programs or opened files). With OpenGL.

  • I configurated it and as last step I went to "themes" > "save" in the configuration-window, gave it another name and clicked on "Do it" (german: "Anwenden") at the bottom of the configuration-window.

  • I put the Cairo-Dock-program into the autostart of the system.

Unfortunately these 4 docks are not all visible, when starting my system.
What do I have to do? Please tell me the possible solution as step-by-step. If the solution is like the above one, please tell me the name of the config-file and the place, where I can find it.

Thanks a lot for your help!!!
