Hello,

A really short announcement: As a few of you already know, Fabounet and I are working hard to port the dock on Windows.
The idea is to replace the Metro interface with a Cairo-Dock session! A lot of people ask us to port the dock to Windows 8 because they hate the new Metro interface (but I don't understand why...) and many of them already donate to help us developing new features and to thank us for the previous work.

And... I want to show you that the first step has been done! We can now compile and launch Cairo-Dock on Windows XP!

http://uppix.net/6/1/b/d2d7eb26a64215c1fb99f22359ceftt.jpg

But it seems that the replacement of Windows Metro interface is a bit more complex than expected... But we are in touch with Metro devs! It's really great because this team thinks that it's a good idea to have different alternatives and we're helping them by creating patches to fix some bugs in their public API!!
I hope the first alpha version will be released soon but currently, if you want to test, you need to download source code of the today (1st April) snapshot (or newer) of Metro on Microsoft website and recompile it with this flag: =D-with-metro-cairo-dock-interface=ON

If you're interested by the project, feel free to help us! There are several ways to help us: How to help us

PS: if you have this error when compiling Cairo-Dock on Windows:
ERROR #6211742: Microsoft's Metro interface: No source code found
simply remove line 62 of the main CMakeLists.txt file and retry again and again.

I think you've to download source code of Windows 8 and rebuild the iso with a script which is available on their github!

don't forget to download and install manually the patch 815-21-3-oz, reboot, update the registry, reboot again, run the program crack-915-no-cd.exe (ignore the warnings from the anti-virus, it's totally safe ), and reboot twice in a row
so in short, a typical windows installation

when will cairo dock be available for windows 8? i cant wait for it to be released! rocketdock has been abandoned, and objectdock is too costly.

mattte, you don’t have to try to disable the metro interface. a huge update to windows 8 is coming soon. it will be called windows 8.1. kernal version is 6.3. It will allow a boot to desktop function which will help ease the user interface.

@Guest: This news was posted the 1st April

If you want to use Cairo-Dock, you need to use GNU/Linux or BSD.

Just try Ubuntu, it's simple, secure, fast and... it's free! => http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop

I've seen Cairo-Dock on Ubuntu, and I love(d) it! But I use Ubuntu just as a backup for Windows, so, I'm happy to see this.

But I don't think it's necessary to disable the Modern environment, because I'm happy with the apps, and I'm a Windows 8 app developer too...

But I LOVE the idea to port the dock to Windows!

Thanks!

But I LOVE the idea to port the dock to Windows!
Cairo-Dock is written in C, the biggest dependences are GTK and GLib, CMake is used as build system and source code is on a BZR repository. All of these libs/tools are available on Windows.
The dock (the core and some plugins) can now (only in the development version) be compiled without X11, so I guess the use of Cygwin can be avoided and the biggest work to do is the interaction with other windows (specific to the environment and its windows manager).

In conclusion, I guess a port to Windows is possible and the work can be not so huge.
But I'm sure that this work will not be started by the current Cairo-Dock devs! We (Fabounet and I) develop it for the pleasure and I'm not sure that it'll be so fun (for us) to develop it on Windows. First Windows is needed and then we have to use it (We love Free and Open Source softwares, we need to know what our computer is doing, we like the idea that we control the computer and not the opposite, that we can customize/modify many many things, that we have a powerful computer with many great features, that a lot of users develop software for their own needs and not only for the needs of a company, that there is a great and nice community, etc. This is why we contribute to Open Source software )

BUT Cairo-Dock is an open source software so everybody can contribute. Of course we can help anybody who wants to port it to Windows, we are not averse to this port

First of all, sorry for necroing the topic, but this thing is really interesting, is it finished, or was the project dropped?

Simply... not started

There were too much problems with Windows (licences cost, we were not able to compile the Linux kernel, etc.)
