Edit from Fabounet: the GSoC ideas list is here

This is just an idea but it can be nice to see students being involved in this project

What's GSOC:
Google Summer of Code is a global program that offers students stipends to write code for open source projects. We have worked with the open source community to identify and fund exciting projects for the upcoming summer.

We have a bit less than 2 weeks to submit applications to Google. More informations there: https://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/document/show/gsoc_program/google/gsoc2013/about_page

Here is a list of all accepted project in 2012: https://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/projects/list/google/gsoc2012

What do you think about that?

What's sure is that you meet the requirements (student, working on an open-source project, and I can be your "mentor")
too bad we missed the previous gsoc, 2 weeks is a bit short to think of something, but why not a third-party applet (or a C applet) ?
a few ideas that represent a big work: porting the dock to wayland, finally-a-good-KDE-integration, building a distribution based on a cairo-dock session, integrating Google Calendar in the dock, ...
Edit: port the dock to a tablet

I think that we just have to submit our application and students have to give their ideas.
But we can also propose some of them: new OpenGL effects, a dash, etc. but these ideas should not necessarily represent a big work (you can have a look to projects of last year: e.g. Integrate GTG to Gnome Shell, Improve MacOSx port of Banshee, etc.) => http://ploum.net/post/be-selected-student-for-soc

How does it work that GSOC?

Is it Google paying a studen to work on a project? How do they decided which project is going to be picked?

these ideas should not necessarily represent a big work

so the KDE integration is a good target
(or the distribution )

Very good idea.

I would suggest a better support of "smart launcher" integration like synapse or a revamp of scoobido for better UI and speed.

Yes I think.

How do they decided which project is going to be picked?
I don't know but according to 2012 list, projects and tasks are really different. But maybe we should be affiliated to big organisations but which one? Not Gnome, not GNU, not Debian, etc.

Currently, it seems that we can register as an Org Admin: https://google-melange.appspot.com/gsoc/profile/org_admin/google/gsoc2013

Taiebot's idea is nice too

ok I can register the dock for the gosc, but maybe we can spend a few days to think of what we can/want to do.

I don't think we must be affiliated to a big project, maybe it would increase our chance but we can't really (maybe with the KDE-integration plug-in ?)

anyway we (= Matttbe) can propose up to 5 projects (IIUC, I would register cairo-dock and "ask" for students to help the project in any ways)

The only "restriction" for us (= fabounet I guess ) is to help student(s) (by being a mentor) and give details about the work of the student(s) to Google.

I'm trying to register the project, but it seems we need a "backup admin".
so we need someone to register as an admin
of course, admin can't be student.

I can be a backup but don't expect me to be able to mentor the "student"

Fabounet...put my name if you need or contact me if you need me to do something

Can be admin too but do not expect me to mentor anything..
I have read that an open source project should have a mailing list.
Do we have one?
I have to say i like to go on some project and read mailing lists about project advancement and requests etc...

I believe we have a ML, but of course when we want to talk we prefer to do that in public to involve as many people as possible.
but indeed, it's a required field, Matttbe what would you fill in with ?

I can put Ppmt or Taiebot ? do you have an account ? (because it checks if the name is registered)

It's not to be mentor, but admin, so I think that having a good knowledge of the project is enough

Yes, we have 3 mailing lists

But about announcements, there are available on our forum, Launchpad, our blogs (fr/en with RSS feeds fr/en) and social networks (G+, Twitter, Identi.ca)

I don't think a gmail account is enough, I think you need to have an account on gsoc : http://www.google-melange.com/
