Dear all,

I'm experiencing a strange behaviour in nautilus within Gnome 3 of Ubuntu 12.04 when I scroll long lists of files using the mouse wheel (It doesn't happen using the scroll bars). During the scrolling the list of files refreshes slowly and when I go with the mouse over the files they update and change to the actual name and icon. If I turn off Cairo, the scrolling turns to normal. It happens only with the effects activated, so with compiz turned on I guess.

Very strange behaviour!

Marco

Hi,
I think we already had such a bug report, I can't remember where it is.
Basically, it seems to be either a problem with the drivers or the Window Manager.

As a workaround, you can try with Metacity instead of Compiz (metacity --replace&) or by disabling the opengl in the dock (cairo-dock -c).

Guest, Monday 11 March 2013 à 12:59

mmm.. It sounds like a downgrade of the system..
should I open a new bug report?

thanks
Marco

what are your graphic card and the drivers ?

Guest, Thursday 28 March 2013 à 19:50

My vaio has an AMD Radeon HD 6470M and an Intel HD, but I use only the second one for power saving issues.
The outpu of lshw -c display | grep driver is:
configuration: driver=radeon latency=0
configuration: driver=i915 latency=0

Thanks!!

well I think using the cairo backend of the dock is the best workaround for you
but you can also report the problem to the devs of the drivers to help them fix it.

Guest, Friday 29 March 2013 à 08:38

restarting cairo with the -c option doesn't resolve the issue.. I'm not an expert but I can't figure out how cairo can interfere with windows scrolling..

maybe the problem lies in Gnome-Shell, if it's what you're using.
if it doesn't occur with Compiz or Metacity, then it's worth reporting the issue to the Gnome-Shell devs

Guest, Saturday 30 March 2013 à 08:17

No, it occurs within classic gnome with compiz (I log in using cairo dock gnome with effects)

Hello,

It's maybe linked with another bug (due to the video drivers): bg_topic.php?t=6819&pos=20#mess_78620

This works fine, thnx.
I think this is not a problem with gfx card drivers.
My drivers haven't change since long time.
I'm on nvidia's 173.x series for Gf FX 5200 card.
I use Mint 13 Mate with latest Mate v.1.6 and on my system
this problem (strange tearing, glitches in scrolling, artefacts on screen etc.) occurs also,
since Cairo was updated to 3.2.
Before this upgrade everything was ok.

And do you also have this bug after doing that:
fabounet :
a workaround is already possible: in the option 'How to draw minimised windows', select 'Make the icon transparent' instead of 'Show a window's thumbnail' (advanced configuration, section 'Taskbar')
(you probably need to restart your session)

I'm checking it right now.
After I change in options to "Make the icon transparent" seems the problem is gone.

Problems occurred Firefox, Chromium, Kadu, Caja, Pluma etc. Even in terminal.
In other words, this error affected the whole system, not just some apps.

After a few minutes of testing, I can say that now it is ok.
"Fixed"

And can you just give us more details about your video card?
glxinfo | grep OpenGL
lspci | grep VGA

Thank you!

@fabounet Bad news if this bug is also visible with nvidia cards

that's quite an old card !
contrary to the Intel, it certainly won't be fixed, not a big deal though

fabounet :

The error occurs also on newer cards. Tested by me on FX5200 and 8800GTX.
A buddy of mine has a three-year nvidia card and the same s***t on screen it gets.

Cairo 3.0 was ok. Worked on those cards.
Now 3.2 is slooow, and due this bug make my, and also some other ppl systems fast unusable.

But ok, is not a problem at all..
Youre right.. "not a big deal though".
Cairo-dock out to trash, some another working dock in.
eot.
