Using Glx-Dock version 3.0.0 from Debian Testing (Wheezy),
Running pure XFCE4 4.8, with only the thunar file system manager installed,
nVidia Graphics.
Problem: I open this URL in firefox:
http://www.barclaycard.co.uk/personal
and drag the favicon into a stack folder.
I close firefox and click on the stack icon to re-open the web page.
Nothing happens.
The same thing happens with this URL:
https://online.lloydstsb.co.uk/personal/logon/login.jsp
However, if I try this URL:
https://www.hsbc.co.uk/1/2/personal
then everything is fine.
When using the URL https://online.lloydstsb.co.uk/personal/logon/login.jsp, cairo dock reports this error:
warning : (/build/buildd-cairo-dock-plug-ins_3.0.0-1-i386-oev8aZ/cairo-dock-plug-ins-3.0.0/gvfs-integration/cairo-dock-gio-vfs.c:cairo_dock_gio_vfs_launch_uri:1085)
gvfs-integration : HTTP Error: Service Unavailable
Thinking this may be a gvfs problem, I symbolically linked /usr/bin/gvfs-open to /usr/bin/xdg-open, so xdg-open is
used instead of gvfs, but cairo dock reports the same error.
When using the URL http://www.barclaycard.co.uk/personal, cairo reports a slightly different error:
warning : (/build/buildd-cairo-dock-plug-ins_3.0.0-1-i386-oev8aZ/cairo-dock-plug-ins-3.0.0/gvfs-integration/cairo-dock-gio-vfs.c:cairo_dock_gio_vfs_launch_uri:1085)
gvfs-integration : HTTP Error: Bad Request
If I try:
gvfs-open http://www.barclaycard.co.uk/personal
I get the error:
gvfs-open: http://www.barclaycard.co.uk/personal: error opening location: HTTP Error: Bad Request
If I try:
gvfs-open https://online.lloydstsb.co.uk/personal/logon/login.jsp
I get the error:
gvfs-open: https://online.lloydstsb.co.uk/personal/logon: error opening location: HTTP Error: Service Unavailable
So there is something wrong I guess with gvfs. If I try:
xdg-open http://www.barclaycard.co.uk/personal
it works, in that a text-based W3M web browser pops up. Same thing happens with:
xdg-open https://online.lloydstsb.co.uk/personal/logon/login.jsp
Trying:
gvfs-open https://www.hsbc.co.uk/1/2/personal
this opens the web site inside firefox (and so not in w3m). However,
xdg-open https://www.hsbc.co.uk/1/2/personal
attempts to open the website using w3m and fails, sitting there with a message "waiting to open a socket".
This all appears to be a bug in the gvfs / xdg setup, but I have no idea how to fix it.
I note that xfce tends to use exo-open for several applications, but exo-open gives same results as xdg-open, since i think xdg-open is a wrapper that calls gvfs or exo as it sees fit.
On another related topic, the cairo-dock FAQ says:
The dustbin remains empty even when I delete a file.
if you're using KDE, you may have to specify the path to the trash folder.
Just edit the applet's configuration, and fill in the Trash path;
However there is no option I can see to specify the path to the trash folder.

Hi,
a text-based W3M web browser pops up
For me it's (almost) as much incorrect, as you expect URLs to be opened in the browser whatever the URL is.
So yes, definitely a problem in the mime settings, the URL pattern is wrong somewhere (maybe the ".jsp" fools the system, I don't have any explanation for the first one though)
you can try to see in the mime database (~/.local/share/mime and /usr/share/mime) how is defined the URL pattern, and in /usr/share/applications/defaults.list for the link between mime types and applications |

Hi Fabounet,
You are as responsive as ever, thank you!
The good news is I have solved the problem. Here's what I did:
Under the XFCE menu, I found the app "Preferred Applications"
The option for Web Browser was set to "Debian Sensible Browser"
I changed this to "firefox" by typing in "firefox" after selecting "Other ...".
Now when I clicked on a web icon in a stack, an attempt to open the default browser was made, but an error came up saying it didn't know how to find it.
I then opened up firefox and under "Edit | Preferences General Tab | System Defaults" I saw that firefox was not set as the default browser.
So I set that option to make it the default browser.
And now everything just works!
The troublesome stack URLs all now work fine.
I hope this of help to others. I feared I would have to dig into some difficult to understand mime settings, but I have been spared that.
Many thanks Fabounet, keep up the good work.

fabounet : thanks for sharing the solution
Glad to assist!
By the way, you might still need to update the FAQ:

However there is no option I can see to specify the path to the trash folder. |
