Maybe this is a well-known trick to many of you, but it was a 'Eureka!' moment for me just a moment ago.

My primary daily-use system is a tiny silent Acer Asipre Revo 1600 connected to the HDTV in my living room, running Ubuntu 11.10 and Cairo-Dock. My compute server, firewall, and file/media server is a dual-Xeon Dell running Fedora 15.

My habit has been to run light-weight apps and GUI-intensive apps on the Acer, and run compute-intensive or net-intensive apps on the remote Dell. I launch local apps using Cairo-Dock, but for the past year I've been launching remote apps using a terminal session.

Today I forgot the name of the binary for an app on the Dell I use only occasionally, and I wished I could remotely access the menu on my Dell. I thought about trying to add another Applications Menu applet to the Cairo-Dock that would reference the menu on the Dell, but I found no way to do this.

I next tried launching gnome-panel on the Dell, but that was not workable. It reminded me that I first tried Cairo-Dock because I didn't like gnome-panel.

Then I had my 'Eureka!' moment: I realized all I had to do was install Cairo-Dock on the Dell, and run another Cairo-Dock instance from there. Doh!

After removing all unneeded applets and launchers, and adding launchers for my most-used apps on the Dell, I now have a wonderfully usable system with two Cairo-Dock instances that cleanly merges the two computers and all their applications at a single desktop.

Cairo-Dock rocks.

Of course, I'm presently manually launching the remote Cairo-Dock from a terminal and SSH session. Any ideas for how to automatically launch it when Cairo-Dock on the Acer starts?

Thank you for this tip

Maybe you can launch this command at startup:
ssh -fX user@remote cairo-dock
(I guess you know that but it can be interesting to log in with your ssh key (if you've added your ssh key on your server, e.g. by using "ssh-copy-id user@remote") and if you want a few compression (but it's not interesting to do that if your server is placed in your local network), you can use the -C parameter)

PS: it's maybe better to add a delay:
sh -c "sleep 10 && ssh -fCX user@remote cairo-dock"

if you want to launch the dock with the session, you can place a link to cairo-dock.desktop in ~/.config/autostart.

or if your session manager doesn't use this folder, you may use the X mechanisms (like the .xsession file).

I'm looking for a way to start the remote Cairo-Dock instance on the Dell whenever the local Acer Cairo-Dock instance starts (which now happens automatically in Ubuntu 11.10).

Fedora 15 isn't letting me do a password-less SSH login ever after a successful ssh-copy-id. I suspect the reason is I have a different UID on each of my two systems. Something I probably should fix...

I found it: SSH password-less login wants remote home directory to have no more than 755 permission.
