Hello there,
As an alternative to the proposed sub-merging mode for a sub-dock, menu or sub-menu to appear within the space of the main dock, i've been thinking about a "slide-in" mode. The main difference is that the background or view does not need to change, in a 3-D view and slide-in mode, the background stays intact and the icons slide sideways instead.
Here is a mock-up, using as an example the Gnome Menu aka Applications Menu:
Phase 01: click on the icon.
Phase 02: icons of the main dock slide leftwards, the current applet or menu (in this case the Gnome Menu) moves also leftwards but remains on the left hand side of the dock. All other icons will keep on moving leftwards, disappearing underneath the main icon.
Phase 03: icons of the sub-dock, menu or sub-menu (here the categories of the Gnome Menu) are appended to the icons of the main dock on the right-hand side, sliding leftwards together with the main icons.
Phase 04: icons of the sub-dock, menu or sub-menu eventually replace icons of the main dock completely, they do not move underneath the main icon and stack instead on the dock. All icons of the menu are present, in 3D-view and the desired icon / category can be selected.
Phase 05: Selecting any sub-menu would re-create the same effect. A right click on an icon / launcher / applet would so too show the menu in slide-in mode. This would require, as in the case of the sub-merging mode, icons for the right-click menu options.
The slide-in mode is also trying to provide sub-information while saving space and keeping the dock neat. The slide-in has the advantage (perhaps on the development side) of not requiring a transformation of the dock's background or view.
Hope you find this inspiring
I think that those two modes i propose (although i realise they may demand lots of work) would make of Cairo a tough competition against unity, which, as you surely know, will be default on Ubuntu 11.04 onwards. And i am not a fan of unity, especially because Canonical has made it very inflexible for users to change from what i have heard (eg. it has to stay on the left side).
Cheers. |

You mean the mock-up is not clear?
What is it then you don't understand? |

Good idea
But it can be nice to have a slide effect (all icons go to the left and they disappear ; then new icons appear and they fill in the dock) and to use the hiding effects too! |

Meh too for me, because there are several problems:
what if the dock is not large enough ?
plus an additional click to show the sub-dock and then revert back to normal mode
also I'm afraid that navigating into sub-sub-docks would be not very handful. |

I understand the concept but I am not sure how it behave in real life.
When I said I get confused it was because I my "main" dock would suddenly disappear to be replaced by new icons...
At my age you don't need much more to confuse me |

Me i always wanted this view. Maybe i would suggest that the subdock would be centered on its main icon and could replace the previous dock.
BTW i love your mockup.. |

If it's an option, OK, but it would drive me crazy. I guess I'm just clumsy, but I often hit the icon beside the one I really want.

As far as i remember the background extension http://www.glx-dock.org/bg_topic.php?t=4994 was more accepted as an option to navigate into menus (such as the Gnome Menu).
But the general idea remains the same, and I think it's important to think of this to keep Cairo of top of current desktop evolution. |
