Hi there,
OK so we have touched the topic several times, recently i also mentioned how i liked some features of Docky, for instance the weather applet or calendar applet which, on-click take up the entire space of the dock to display information.
I like this feature because it uses the space adequately (i am on a 17" screen i believe and i find it small enough, and net-books definitely need better space management). Also it is cleaner, sub-docks or pop-up menus with sub-menus are convoluted and make the dock look like a Xmas tree.
Since i am not good at programming, and since those who are good at it ask for mock-ups, then i made some mock-ups.
Now i propose an example of this "sub-merging dock" feature with the Applications Menu (aka. Gnome Menu) applet.
Phase 01: Click on the Applications Menu icon on the main dock
Phase 02: The icon of the applet moves to the left (if it was not there already) and the title appears above it, while other icons on the dock fade away or move downwards / sideways). Simultaneously, the dock's background stretches upwards, from a 3D-view (or whatever view it was in -- although i haven't thought about whether it would work with other views) to a 2D-view, or default view. The content of the Applications Menu fills in the space of the dock: icons and labels are scattered and / or stretched, in order to fit orderly on the dock. The background shouldn't be shy about stretching at all, icons and labels should not stretch past a minimum size obviously.
(Oops, "accessories" takes two "s")
Phase 03: User clicks on one of the categories (icon or label) of the Applications Menu (here the Accessories category, for the sake of the example). Then again, the icon of the selected category moves left in stead of the Applications Menu's, the title changes accordingly and while all prior icons and labels fall away, the space of the dock is filled with applications of the Accessories category. Clicking on any of these applications would launch it, while the dock would retrieve its original form. If the user has made a mistake and wants to go back to the parent category, he/she can press "Escape", or perhaps a button [<-] back could be added.
And voilà! I think that rocks really.
NB: a right click on an icon (applet or launcher) could have the same feature: all menus and options of the right-click could appear using the same sub-merging technique.
You can imagine many applications of this feature without difficulty:
- the Log-out applet could offer the different options (restart, log-out, hibernate etc.)
- the Network Monitor applet could offer all kinds of information (available network, download, etc.)
- if there were a Skype applet, there could be status modification, make a call etc.
- same for chat applets
- micro-blogging applets could be made this way too e.g. click on icon and type your message on twitter
- blablabla
So?
Whether you like the idea or not, you can't deny it's a niiice mock-up! |

If it's possible, that will need a lot of work ... but yes, that's perfect ! |

It could look great but again the transition from 3D to 2D needs to be very smooth or it will look ugly |

ok this mockup is much nicer than the other one
that's probably a long-term feature but it seems to worth a try. |
