I have Ubuntu Maverick in one partition as my main OS, but I'm now trying the current alpha of Ubuntu Natty. It has replaced Gnome with Unity, and although I'm using it, I find its dock lacks some things I want. So I installed CD for more goodies.

One need is to have access to all of the installed programs, rather than just the 15 you can have in the Unity dock. The Application Menu applet does not show anything, and I guess it's because Ubuntu isn't using the usual Gnome arrangement.

Is it possible to populate the Application Menu applet in Natty?

Hello,

Unity has been added to ubuntu-desktop metapackage a few days ago but you should still have all gnome packages just as before... So... this applet should work! And it works fine for me
I'm using Ubuntu Natty since Ubuntu Maverick's release and I compile the dock by myself...

How did you install Cairo-Dock? By compiling? It's possible that something have change with the introducing of Gnome3. Is it possible to compile the latest revision by using a script and test this applet?
After this test you can:
  • De-install the dock using the script and reinstall the previous version of the dock (that you install from a repository or by other mean)
  • Or simply continue using this dock and just update it regularly (from the script)

PS: Unity isn't enabled by default on my computer. I guess it's just because it's not a fresh install. What about your desktop and unity?

Thanks for the thoughts, matttbe. I installed Natty a couple of days ago, and Unity was enabled by default. I can, however, log on with the old Gnome desktop, if I wish. I may go back to that, because I like using the drawer widgets in the top bar for oft-used programs, and then I can eliminate the bottom bar by adding its stuff to the top. So I end up with access to everything with just a single bar at top.

I added Cairo with Synaptic. I've done enough compiling to know how much trouble it can be, so I don't do it any more. Perhaps the updates will take care of any problems.

Well, I just did an update, and sure enough, the Application Menu is working. I love Debian-based distros!
