Another idea:
I propose a layer-view, which would basically be a dock behaving like the compiz desklet layer. That would give a whole screen as an interface to put all kinds of nice launchers etc on it  |

All the desklets indeed, but not the launchers That's where the layer-view would make a difference.
But another way of doing this would be to allow several rows of launchers and / or applets on the dock. |

well I'm not fan of switching to another context to launch a task and then back to the normal context to use this task.
I find it nice for desklets that just displays some piece of information though (weather, clock, battery, RSS-reader) |

That's interesting: how do you do that?
I guess i could then create several docks on the layer, move their position across the screen to create several rows... it sounds like something fun to try out. |
