Would it be possible to integrate the Zeitgeist framework into Cairo Dock? This would be a super awesome feature, and it can't be soo hard to implement because both docky and AWN already sport Zeitgeist integration. These two docks approach Zeitgeist from two different angles: docky integrates "recent" and "related" file lists into the right-click menu when clicking on an application starter. AWN has a seperate Zeitgeist applet that shows files that are "related" to the application in focus. I personally like AWN's approach better, but that's a mere matter of taste.

So what do you think?

sure that would be a great feature.
but Zeitgest is far from being included by default in any distribution, so we still have some time I guess (I don't even have it on my PC )

we can start discussing on it though, which are the features that Zeitgest can do, and which are the one you'd like to see in the dock ? (knowing that both the plug-in and the applet approches are possible in Cairo-Dock)
Also, please try to give concrete examples of use, it's easier to understand the needs
Thanks.

well, i'm not an expert on the technical capabilities of zeitgeist, so maybe there's even more possibilities to it than i can imagine right now. but as far as i know, what zeitgeist basically does is to log all kinds of different information when using files, and connecting them based on time and date, number of times used, location (feature they're working on right now), other related files (in the sense of "what song did i listen to when i edited my photos?") etc.. far from all the planned features have been implemented, as far as i know, so right now, one might say, zeitgeist doesnt offer significantly more information than what we have now with the "recent documents" menu in the Applications Menu applet, but it's under heavy development

i suggest, for more precise information on the technical side you contact the zeitgeist team on their launchpad page: https://launchpad.net/zeitgeist-project

as far as i'm concerned, in its current state zeitgeist has two basic use-cases:

1. file-search on the basis of recency and relevancy (recently used, most used and such).
2. relate files to different applications: what files are recently or mostly used with this or that application, or what do i typically do while i edit documents.

as i already said, i have a tendency towards the applet approach, so when i open an application and then click on the applet, it automatically shows me the files that i often use and that i recently used with that application. it could also show "related" files, such as the song i listened to the other day when i edited that particular document.

seems already a nice feature, although a bit limited for an applet, but as you said it will probably grow up.

I'll create a task, so that anyone wanting to code it can start.
(Matttbe, your first applet ? )
