I have used Cairo_Dock for some time on Ubuntu 9.10 which has a Nvidia GForce 7300LE using the current proprietary driver and really like it. Over the weekend I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 and Cairo-Dock seemed to work fine with Campiz. However, I could not change my mouse pointer to a large size. After fussing around for some time I found that by switching to Metacity I could get a mouse pointe which is large enough to see. But then Cairo-Dock works fine but has a black background. Checking, I find that /usr/bin/libGL.so exists and I added myself to the video group.
- The version of Cairo-Dock ('cairo-dock -v' in a terminal).
2.1.3-10-lucid- Your GNU/Linux distribution (Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, etc.).
Ubuntu 10.04- Or you using OpenGL or not.
When I issue cairo-dock --o, I get the following:

couldn't find an appropriate visual, trying to get one without Stencil buffer
(it may cause some little deterioration in the rendering) ...
warning : (cairo-dock-opengl.c:cairo_dock_initialize_opengl_backend:189)
still couldn't find an appropriate visual ourself, trying something else, this may not work with some drivers ...

activating pbuffer, usually buggy drivers will crash here ... ok, they are fine enough.

I get a similar result if I run Cairo-Dock without OpenGL.
- Your Window manager (Compiz, Metacity, Kwin, Openbox, etc.).
With Compiz, cairo-dock works fine.
With Metacity cairo-dock sits on a black rectangled- Any other details you think could be useful .
Don't forget to replace this text by yours ! .
- Your Desktop Environment (Gnome, KDE, XFCE, etc.).
Gnome
I would appreciate any suggestion that would help get rid of the background in the absence of Compiz. I really want to be able to see my cursor pointer as well as benefit from Cairo-Dock.
Many Thanks in Advance,
Don |

if you are not running COmpiz but just Metacity then you need to activate the composite in Metacity
Please read the wiki

Thanks for pointing me to the solution. I was able to get rid of the black background using gconf-edit.
I apologize for not finding the answer in the FAQ myself. Somewhere on the site (I thought it was the FAQ), I found a different entry mentioning the back background but the entry did not lead to a cure.
Thanks again,

no worries... I didn't mean to tell you off.
Actually it might good to fix the wiki if you say that 2 places are talking about black background... |
