Hopefully someone is porting Cairo Dock to a new open-source project and will take it further. These authors are stone deaf to problems, for the most part. It won't even build on Ubuntu 16. I posted a question about that 3 months ago, but no help from the developers creating the build/source.

This whole thing is looking pretty pathetic from the source side of things. Maybe someone has made it build successfully on Ubuntu 16?

Is Cairo-Dock in the repositories of Ubuntu 16?

Hi,

I started this thread a while back and I see it has helped quite a few of you.

I am guessing a few mint users have upgraded to Mint 18 Sarah and like myself need to update /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/cairo-dock/libcd-weather.so which is essentially Ubuntu 16.04 64 bit. I noticed a compiled version for 16.04 32 bit, but unless
I missed it, I have not seen the 16.04 64 bit posted anywhere in the forum.

It would be very much appreciated if Guest (first guest post) would post a compiled version of libcd-weather.so for those of us who have finally moved to 16.04 64 bit.

Many thanks for your great assistance,

garystewart

I'm on it. I hope I'll have something to show tomorrow (packaging is always a funny moment, full of curses).

To @Iamwithin and @garystewart above. Se the reply by @Guest, Thursday 23 June 2016 à 21:05:

It also doesn't build on Ubuntu Xenial (ver. 16.04, latest) because it requires deprecated packages in order to build!
I put in a question about this weeks ago, and the GLX-Dock guys have been eerily silent... like they're not using the latest stuff!!! Argh!
http://www.glx-dock.org/bg_topic.php?t=8948
Oh, well. NO weather for me... argh!

Hello, I published a new applet Clouds, a clone (rewrite) of weather that should work on every system. More info to come, but here's the repo.

Add this repository for Ubuntu 32 or 64 bits: [1]

deb http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/SQP:/cairo-dock-go/xUbuntu_16.04/ ./

Install the package cairo-dock-goapplets:

apt install cairo-dock-goapplets

Restart your dock

(note that I can't test those deb versions ATM)

Debian 8 build failed for still unknown reasons and I'll work on something for arch (certainly AUR directly).

[1] also known as i386 or amd64. Let me know if I need to activate any other arch.

Thanks for your efforts. I got this error: W: GPG error: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/SQP:/cairo-dock-go/xUbuntu_16.04 ./
Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 67D5A14C479D2963

And after installing clouds there seems to be nowhere to enter location and no mouse over showing the 5 days weather.

There seems to be one little error for the new 'clouds' applet and that is when I first run it
say for 2 days & nights, when I mouse over there are 4 days presented. Without any changes at all on my end,
after 45 minutes when I mouse over the same 2 days there are now 14 days & nights presented.
Don't know why it's duplicating but it is.. (Mint Mate 18 - 64 bit).

...

I see now every time it checks the current conditions it duplicates the two entries.
Now there are 16 less than a minute later, if I check again there will be 18, then 20, and so forth.

Thanks for the tests and reports. I'll check that, and see if I can push something with my commit tonight.

Note that there are now a lot of ways to run applets and I can't test all of them each time :). I work with my own version of the dock, and I can't run the real dock at the same time, they share the same method to run external applets.

I also fixed a few things on my dock, and should update packages for the rework after the commit.

archlinux packages are now also recreated for applets

Edit your pacman.conf file to add the repo:
/etc/pacman.conf

[home_SQP_cairo-dock-go_Arch_Extra]
SigLevel = Never
Server = http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/SQP:/cairo-dock-go/Arch_Extra/$arch

Install the package:
pacman -Sy cairo-dock-goapplets

Restart your dock

Debian: Guess what, it's a version problem ^^. The go version is too old. I may try to fix that when go 1.7 is released (soon), but if anyone can try the Ubuntu packages on Debian, that would be nice.
It seem the Ubuntu 16.04 packages are also working on a Mint 17.

PS: you also have a lot of other applets to play with if you want. They lack users, so feel free to add comments, suggestions, reports.

Any idea if it will work on Mint 17 'Rebecca'? That distro is supposed to be based on Ubuntu 14.04, but the lib for the Weather plugin for Cairo-dock that was posted here for Ubuntu does not work. Might that have something to do w/ the fact that it does not work on Debian either?

I followed instructions to add the repository, install the goapplets package and then restart the dock. It seems I actually had to restart the computer to get the new menu to show up. The applet is now appearing in the dock but with multiple issues. I'm on 32bit Ubuntu 16.04.

I'm getting the same error that iamwithin had with the menu duplicating the days. As the applet makes more and more duplicates, the menu becomes unusable very quickly. Also, the applet menu shows the options for 'show current conditions', 'open webpage', 'recheck now', and 'set location' twice. Not sure if those things are related or not.

From a usage perspective, the way different menus work (Visibiltiy) is a bit confusing. In the old weather applet, getting all the applet menus to disappear worked by left-clicking on the menu. In Clouds, to make the forecast menu disappear, I move the cursor away from the menu. To make the individual forecast day menu disappear, I left-click on it. Adding to that, to make the cairo-dock main menu disappear, I left-click on any space not on the menu. It feels a bit schizophrenic.

I also noticed I can't change whether or not to display labels in my sub-dock any more. "Display text for all icons " (I'm using Slide for my sub-dock view) does nothing to add the days of the week to the forecast icons. Now I have to go into the captions preferences and 'show labels for all icons'. Now I have labels for the days of the week icons, but also for every icon in the dock, which I don't want.

Shortly before the weather applet stopped working, I noticed that my city (San Francisco, CA) would display incorrectly as another nearby city. No matter what I did to input the correct name or city weather code would fix this. This error is still happening. Not sure if it's a problem with the applet or with Weather.com. When I open up the webpage through the applet it goes to the right city page, but I can't get correct weather info for San Francisco in the app.

In addition, I noticed I can't change the icon theme no matter which one I select.

There may be more issues, but I frankly gave up trying to fiddle with the app and consider it unusable as it stands. I really appreciate that this was worked on at all and hope the info I provided helps to make this new version usable. I really liked the former weather app.

You have more chances to know than me. I saw it working on a mint 17.2 (IIRC, it's a machine I installed a year ago).

Meneer Jansen :

Build problems between the dock applets and my applets pack can't be related at all. It's a totally different language, code and compiler. This language is 40 years younger, and IMHO a lot more suited to nowadays needs like networking and multicores. It's also shorter and easier to read (1000 lines total: applet code, weather API, and backend weather.com)

aamadis :
I'm getting the same error that iamwithin had with the menu duplicating the days.

New version to try. More info on the dedicated page

aamadis :
Also, the applet menu shows the options for 'show current conditions', 'open webpage', 'recheck now', and 'set location' twice. Not sure if those things are related or not.

Seem to be a dock bug I have for years with all external applets (maybe distro related). As I spent some time on the rewrite, I had the chance to experience that double signal from inside the dock. My status on this one: I never understood why dock menu aren't also displayed twice. The menu is only displayed once when in internal mode (with the package cairo-dock-rework).

aamadis :

From a usage perspective, the way different menus work (Visibiltiy) is a bit confusing. In the old weather applet, getting all the applet menus to disappear worked by left-clicking on the menu. In Clouds, to make the forecast menu disappear, I move the cursor away from the menu. To make the individual forecast day menu disappear, I left-click on it.

Related to the way external applets work. I can't control the subdock display, I just add or remove icons from the list. The dock manages the display in automatic mode so I can't do much (could be improved in internal mode but not planned soon)

Note that the dock main menu is a real menu, getting the focus and requiring an action to close. Subdocks are more flexible, they don't require the focus, and can auto close on mouse over.

aamadis :
I also noticed I can't change whether or not to display labels in my sub-dock any more. "Display text for all icons " (I'm using Slide for my sub-dock view) does nothing to add the days of the week to the forecast icons. Now I have to go into the captions preferences and 'show labels for all icons'. Now I have labels for the days of the week icons, but also for every icon in the dock, which I don't want.

I'm not sure I understand the problem here. Could you add a screenshot and tell explicitly what label display you need (I never really used the weather applet, but Clouds seem to work the same for labels). And I just set labels text, the dock choose to display them or not.

aamadis :
Shortly before the weather applet stopped working, I noticed that my city (San Francisco, CA) would display incorrectly as another nearby city. No matter what I did to input the correct name or city weather code would fix this. This error is still happening. Not sure if it's a problem with the applet or with Weather.com. When I open up the webpage through the applet it goes to the right city page, but I can't get correct weather info for San Francisco in the app.

You'll have to make some tests on your side, as I can't really track that. The "current conditions" dialog reports the observatory name for your selected city. I can't do more than that (select cities as the site returns them, and print the observatory the site use for that location). Try more precise area names.

I also found at least 5 API for different weather websites. My main problem with adding other sites is I can't know ATM if they use the same range of weather conditions as the weather.com site (to match icons with expected climate)

Let me know if you can't have better results, I'll try to spend some time on that matter (it could be interesting to have at least a second source website to be able to compare and have a backup).

aamadis :
In addition, I noticed I can't change the icon theme no matter which one I select.

I have some work to do to expand to more themes. I have to dive in the code to understand how this option is saved (behavior seem to change for the same option between internal and external).

aamadis :
There may be more issues, but I frankly gave up trying to fiddle with the app and consider it unusable as it stands. I really appreciate that this was worked on at all and hope the info I provided helps to make this new version usable. I really liked the former weather app.

As you can see, it takes some time to be able to give complete answers, I had some tests to do, and a big patch to finish.

While limited, external applets are easier to create, compile and deploy. Very few people have the skill and the will to hack into C code.
Go code should be easier to understand, and has proven it can evolve pretty well (way better than C).

But I'm working on more than just an applet (11 published in the pack you installed), I try to provide an easy applet development environment for more new applets. So I slowly expand my applets needs and try to gather common methods in the API.

The last big patch added more automation for the applet config loading. Improvements are more focused on the invisible side, even if some benefits are visible (for example, no crash were reported). For Clouds, I reworked shortkeys, templates and added the ability for applets to update the config without the GUI.

If you continue to give such detailed reports, we could reach a usable state to get your weather info until your real weather applet is restored.

Note that the second part of the project takes a lot of my dev time, it's the rewrite of the dock core (the binary) with its config. (I started from scratch in a better language what I couldn't do on the original code). It runs my applets as internal applets with less limits and problems than with a real dock (but expect so many others from the incomplete part). The internal interaction hasn't been expanded much yet, as I want my applets to behave as much as possible the same as internal and external.

If you could also give a try to the cairo-dock-rework package, and its cdc binary that does most of a dock job (and a little more on some aspects. But the nice new config is at 80% completion). Remember there's a lot of work to do on a lot of small options, but it's doing a nice job as my main and only dock/panel for two years. (should work as a replacement for the cairo-dock binary)

And I don't have a debian like to ensure the commands I give will work.

IIRC, with the software manager, you have an option like "software sources" where you can add a repository address, then click refresh.

manual version (can't test)!
sudo echo "deb http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/SQP:/cairo-dock-go/xUbuntu_16.04/ ./" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/cairo-dock-go.list

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cairo-dock-goapplets

BTW, your distro seem pretty old, and I'm not sure your dock and GTK versions are OK. (I need to split the TVPlay applet to remove the GTK dependency)

And let us know what was missing in the doc so we can improve it.
