The Intel box a did was for my brother. I can get at it within a day or two.

I do know it is an on-board 945 chipset.

I have the same issue on Ubuntu 14.04 Unity, which installed on VirtualBox VM. The video driver is:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: InnoTek Systemberatung GmbH VirtualBox Graphics Adapter

Anyway, the physical video card is AMD/ATI Radeon HD 6450.

matttbe :
Thank you for all these tests

Ok so it seems that it's due to a problem with video drivers (proprietary AMD and free Intel drivers) only when using XFCE...
What's your Intel video card?
glxinfo | grep OpenGL
lspci | grep VGA

I guess that the best solution is maybe to report this problem to XFCE and Mesa devs.

Then if it is a vedio driver issue, how do you example some icons works and some doesn't? It should work for all or for nothing.

When I was trying out MacOSX theme, I saw the text in grey/black for the icons which had no text in default theme.
I think by default black color is set and hence not visible in the default theme.

FWIW, I am having this problem with a new installation on Ubuntu Gnome Fallback with a fairly old, basic AMD video card.

I've used the dock with this same system previously, but I was having unrelated problems with my installation, so I reinstalled and began having this problem. I may be using a different video driver before.

It was much worse until I played around with the Captions/Font, and set a custom font for labels. First, I set it to "Sans 12", and it worked for most. Not Sans 11, and not Sans 13 or 14! Then I tried a few others, and found that with Ubuntu Mono 12, they all seem to work.

I'm willing to try more things, if desired.

Are you all of you using XUbuntu? Do you have this bug with or without the OpenGL backend? Can you try with the other one?

Is it maybe possible to give us a link to a screenshot? Maybe we miss something...

Ubuntu here, not XUbuntu. Happened with both OpenGL and without.

As of the last update, this appears to be resolved.

On yet another machine - my most powerful laptop with a relatively new nVidia card - has not shown this issue

Is it possible that this bug only occurs when using an Intel video card?
glxinfo | grep OpenGL
lspci | grep VGA

Happened the same for me with Intel video and AMD Raedon 5830.

Same on AMD Raedon R9 280X, on Ubuntu 14.04. Fresh install, with AMD's proprietary drivers.

(sorry for the delay)

Mmm, there is maybe a bug with the tool which manage the fonts? Hard to say because it seems we have this bug "at random". It's maybe due to another program: maybe there is a daemon which causes trouble?

Looks strange! Can someone else confirm that this bug is "fixed" when using Ubuntu Mono 12 font?

Which update? Because you're using our "Weekly PPA"?

Guest, Saturday 14 June 2014 à 16:44

Had the same issues with the icon labels
Tried the latest update from the "weekly ppa" and that indeed solved the issue

I've just run Synaptic Package Manager this morning and found that it suggested an update to Cairo Doc. This I have done and the test is now appearing.......

Looking at the version and it is still showing as 3.3.2.

It seems that the issue has been resolved.

Thanks everybody for your support.

Are you sure? With this update?

Other users said that the issue was fixed thanks to a new version available in our Weekly PPA but I didn't include fixes for this bug in the new version available in Ubuntu Trusty Updates repositories
(and I don't know which specific modification has fixed this bug It's maybe due to an update of another package...)

Hey, i changed the fonts to ubuntu mono, and it worked! Dont know why, of course, but its working even when i change the size to 13 or 14. Thanks Marty
