Hi.

It would be nice in order to call for designers and more user contributions (Whishful thinking) to do a competition for cairo-dock theme.

Do not know for rewards how we could do it but the top three themes should be included in the list of themes.

Maybe the winner theme could be selected as the default theme.

Hi!

Good idea

Yes, why not

Maybe the winner theme could be selected as the default theme.
It can be "dangerous" (first, we need at least two or three competitors ) and then, it's really hard to create a default theme: it has to be "neutral", it has to be well integrated with most icons themes, it has to show what Cairo-Dock can do (but not all features), it has to be designed for newbies people, etc. etc.
By definition, I think the default can't be the best one but it has to be accepted by most people

PS: maybe do you want to be in charge of this competition?

yeah i could be in charge of the competition.

I will need some help thought and a Jury maybe. We should talk more privately about this in order to have maximum impact when we launch the project

Sure! We just have to wait for Fabounet's answer

more themes are welcome of course

especially, some themes that would completely integrate into a given desktop environment (with the wallpaper, the icon theme, the gtk/kde theme, etc)
I don't know how we could ship them, but it would be nice to have such packs

Great! Let's start (the preparation of) the competition

I guess we need articles (fr/en) and some rules:
  • should work with 3.3 (or 3.2, should be the same)
  • icons' licence + author/website
  • all icons/images should be in the package -> no link to external files: we have to put all files in ~/.config/cairo-dock/current_theme/icons and used only the name of the file
  • packaged with the themes packager
  • should work with common desktops: if possible, used launchers from the default theme (/usr/share/cairo-dock/themes) and used symlinks in icons dir
  • where and when to submit
  • what about the rewards: themes on the server, screenshot on the home page and on the future "ads" of the next stable version.
  • (...)

but I'm sure that taiebot already have all ideas to manage this competition
(feel free to use wiki pages, ask if you need help and notify us when you want )

Yes something like that the only stuff which troubles me is where are we going to store the packaged theme?

We need a size limit for uploads and a location where people could upload their themes.

Which packaged theme?

No, I think it's not so important. If people wants to import icons theme, they can import the 'apps' dir of this theme, the size should not be too big.

and a location where people could upload their themes.
They can upload it on a server (by using Drop to Share applet or anything else) and share the link on the forum (or in private? by email?)

Sorry i meant compressed theme (tar.gz).

I would prefer if they could upload it to a private server.

they can send it the way they want, as long as we can reproduce their theme easily on our PC
the goal is to have a consistent set of dock + gtk/kde theme + icon theme + wallpaper (+ other things like emerald, conky, or even some compiz options)

of course the icon theme can be provided as a link to download (or even its name if it's well known), or included in the package

Yes, the best is to have a consistent set but it's not an obligation (all current themes on our server are not linked with GTK/KDE theme + wallpaper + (...)

Yes a cairo-dock theme competition means only the dock will be judged.

Yes
But it's better to have a nice icons theme, etc. and if the screenshot is nice (e.g. not with a white background, etc. )
