Hello,

even if this message is not about a bug :
    • The version of Cairo-Dock : 3.1.0
    • Your GNU/Linux distribution : arch
    • Or you using OpenGL or not : mostly opengl, but sometimes cairo
    • Your Window manager : Compiz
    • Your Desktop Environment : XFCE with some Gnome3 apps

I wonder what's the purpose of "cairo-dock-unity-bridge"? Does it have to be started, even if there's no Unity installed or running? Can it be ifdef-ed at compile time?

Thank's a lot for the dock,

Bert

I had the same questions and asked fabounet. He will still have to complete the answer as I'm not sure.

Unity bridge is here to relay applications unity features (mostly an equivalent of our quickinfo and progressbar) to their dock icon.

What I'm not sure of, is if some sort of unity daemon have to be enabled or not (is our relay autonomous?).

And I agree with you, informations and options would be better (never used unity, and I have no way to know if something is supposed to be triggered somehow).

There's a test script supposed to animate your firefox icon with this plugin in sources: cairo-dock-plug-ins/Dbus/misc/launcher-test.py

I searched forum and wiki and didn't find anything substantial. Could you point me to the thread?

As far as I understand, it (the bridge) provides some dbus stuff (messages I presume). But apparently there's no one on the receiving end.

I'm currently reading the source, although I'm no coder. I'll try to get this process started if (and only if) unity is runnning. Maybe I'm lucky and nothing breaks.

Hello,

This 'Unity bridge' is just there for applications which communicate with the Unity API but it's not restricted to Unity sessions
(e.g. Firefox with "Unity integration" plugin)

This plugin is only launched if the sources have been compiled with DBusMenu-GTK.
Note that you can also remove this "cairo-dock-unity-bridge" file.

Maybe we can add an option on DBus to not launch it.
@ fabounet: what do you think about that?

It does not require a "unity" daemon, any application can send message to Unity (and in our case, the dock will act as Unity, and therefore display the information).
So it's not really linked to Unity, it's just the support of the Launcher API
Maybe the name is unfortunate, I could actually have called it "cairo-dock-launcher-API-daemon" or something like that

cairo-dock-unity-emulator or cairo-dock-fake-unity

bridge sounds like it has something else to connect to.

I rename it to cairo-dock-launcher-API-daemon on BZR, is it better?
(and it's now possible to not launch it at startup) => rev 2624
