Hello,

I understand from the install section of this site, that, regarding Gentoo, the desktop-effects overlay is used.

However, this overlay apparently suggests no V3 ebuild.

Half a dozen of other overlays do suggest V3 ebuilds but these ebuilds appear significantly different.

Which one would you advise for running under a stable arch + kde 4.8.5 ?

Additionally some overlays put the plugins under x11-plugins while others under x11-misc. What is upstream's preferred choice ?

Hello,

I'm not using Gentoo but if you give us a few links to different ebuilds, we can help you to choose the best for your system (e.g. sabayon and quarks overlays for the 3.0.2 version seem fine).

Additionally some overlays put the plugins under x11-plugins while others under x11-misc. What is upstream's preferred choice ?
If 'x11-plugins' means: 'it's a plugin of X11', I guess it's wrong and x11-misc is maybe better

Thank you mattbe for answering.

As of today with 3.0.2, the most different are :

- quarks : http://gpo.zugaina.org/AJAX/Ebuild/2153956/View - Main particularities : Dependency on gtk2 OR gtk3 and applies fix_lib6464 patch
- sabayon : http://gpo.zugaina.org/AJAX/Ebuild/2215825/View - Main particularities : Dependency on gtk3 only and applies fix_lib6464 and dbus-thread patches.
- rion : http://gpo.zugaina.org/AJAX/Ebuild/2155094/View - Main particularities : I think there are missing dependencies and no patch applied.

So basically, my question would turn to be :

- Is the dbus-thread patch important ?
- I'd like to depend on gtk2 only, is gtk3 an upstream recommendation with 3.0.2 ?

there are only minor differences between the GTK2 and 3 versions yet, it only a matter of using the new functions names and trying to get more benefit from the label which became flexible. So if you prefer GTK2, go for it.

For the dbus patch, IIRC, it prevented bugs for some polling applets. I can't say you won't have bugs without it, but most of the dock should work safely. (musicplayer and external applets use DBUS, not sure about others)

Thanks SQP. Tried sabayon changing gtk3 to gtk2.
(Note that care is needed to choose webkit-gtk in slot 2 to be coherent)

And the result is...
Superb !

I register just to say thank you so much !

I think that this patch is mainly needed for the newer versions of GLib because it seems 'dbus_g_thread_init' was automatically added before
