Metacity is a window manager (WM). For Gnome, there is also Compiz (aka Gnome with effects).
Maybe can you try to reproduce this bug with compiz? You can launch it with this command from a terminal
compiz --replace

(With metacity : metacity --replace) Can you also close all opened windows, remove a launcher and press the Escape key during the freeze?

Mmh, if you're not using metacity, what's your WM?
Which session are you using? A Gnome-classic session?

About the black background, simply have a look there: wiki
This command should remove this black background
gconftool-2 --type bool --set /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager true

When you start your session, you will have the same WM (so if you change the WM during your session, you'll have your default WM back for the next session => you've to modify your config but I don't know where... with Gnome 2.30 I guess you can have a look to the Appearance config menu: System / Preferences / Appearance)

Can you (install and) launch gconf-editor and check the value of these two keys: desktop/gnome/session/required_components (you should see Window Manager) and desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager

And is it better if you launch these two commands:
gconftool-2 --type bool --set /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager true
metacity --replace

If you want to have another WM at startup, I think you've to modify these gconf keys (but I'm not sure... I'm not using my computer right now): desktop/gnome/session/required_components (you should see something about "Window Manager") and desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager

But there is another solution (which is a workaround ): simply by adding a new application at startup (System / Preferences / Applications at startup) with this command:
metacity --replace

lspci | grep VGA

Even if it's not recent drivers, it's should not be a problem...

Strange... @fabounet: an idea?

Llabtaem:

Go to 'System Tools' and run 'System Monitor'
Click on the 'Processes' tab
Sort by process name by clicking on the column header
One of the running processes will be either Compiz or Metacity
Let us know which one is running

Yes, this is strange that it seems you're using metacity and if you relaunch it later it's better... Is it maybe launched as root?
