Have read almost everything, including the earlier, and similar, post which is now marked resolved. Struggling on this one. I have done re-installs and everything I can think of ...
Everything was fine following an upgrade from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04 and was really pleased (thanks) with the cairo-dock 3.0.0.1-0ubuntu1 via canonical. I have not been using Cairo-dock long but did have v 2.4 installed with 11.10.
Then, as is normal, I decided to check my software sources as release upgrades disable third-party listings. I had Blender, Virtual box etc to re-activate as well. I updated & was offered an upgrade to cairo-dock-plug-ins 3.0.0.3 (I seem to to remember). This is when problems started.
I don't know if this bit is important but I'm detailing it in case it helps or is the cause. At this software sources point I decided to go to this site and double check sources. I had 'http://repository.glx-dock.org/ubuntu precise' but then noticed the refs to launchpad and to tuxfamily. I think I got confused ... Anyway I changed from glx to launchpad and upgraded. Since then I have tried setting it tuxfamily, which I think is the correct one. But I have also tried taking off all 3rd P Cairo listings and purge/re-installing canonical only, to put it as it was. Still no luck.
I have found config files in ~/.config and /usr/share and checked these - Since 11.10 I have done some learning on Lightdm. I upgraded to a new graphics card a couple of weeks ago (Nvidia 430 with OpenGL) so have been discovering Compiz and CCSM. I think I am right that Cairo, unlike Unity, relies on Dbus and freedesktop.org (?)
One thing someone could definitely help with, is when the Cairo-dock fails and tells me that it no use without plugins, how do I logout from the almost blank screen? Killing gnome-session won't work. The only way I have found of getting back to the login (and desktop selector) screen is to do ctrl-alt-t and sudo reboot....
The other thing is I have been a bit worried about losing all my personal settings for the dock every time that I re-install. I have copied the cairo-dock folder in ~/.config. Can I just paste this back over the new install?
I am feeling this is a system problem as other user profiles have exactly the same issue.

Hello!
This bug is maybe similar to this one: http://glx-dock.org/bg_topic.php?t=4390#mess_73242
Can you give me the output of this command launched from a terminal: apt-cache policy cairo-dock cairo-dock-core cairo-dock-plug-ins cairo-dock-plug-ins-data
And try this command to fix this bug: sudo apt-get purge cairo-dock-core
sudo apt-get install cairo-dock cairo-dock-core
PS: Our tuxfamily repo for Ubuntu is a mirror of the Launchpad ppa. |

Thanks Matt,
This is the output. Looks identical to me, before and after. Canonical repos only, for this one.

You can simply add our ppa to fix this bug
sudo -v
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cairo-dock-team/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade |

So, I thought I had already done this after reading the other post http://glx-dock.org/bg_topic.php?t=4390#mess_73242
But, I have done it again(?) and it now works. Yay. Thanks.
The apt-cache policy cairo-dock cairo-dock-core cairo-dock-plug-ins cairo-dock-plug-ins-data is worth now highlighting, for anyone else with similar probs.
I have just spotted the mistake in the output in the above message 2. Couldn't see it earlier.
cairo-dock-core:
Installed: 3.0.0.1-1ubuntu1~oneiric
cairo-dock-plug-ins-data:
Installed: 3.0.0.1-1ubuntu3~precise
I think this was the root problem in the other post too. Puzzle what's causing it but solution re-emphasized then.

BTW
Didn't seem to lose any settings at all or seem to need a backup. When I re-installed, all my configs, custom launchers were still there. |

sure, they are in ~/.config/cairo-dock, the installed files are in only /usr
that's why re-installing a software with the same version usually never fixes anything, because all the config files are in the home. |
