I started up Glx-dock on my Ubuntu 12.04 system about a week and a half ago and liked the look a lot, but I was getting occasional system crashes, so I stopped using it. (Not saying glx-dock was causing the crashes -- just being cautious.) Ubuntu 12.04 is getting more and more stable (approaching release in April), so I decided to give Glx-dock another go. So far so good.

When I started up glx-dock this morning, a little panel popped up to tell me that I was now using version 3.0, with many improvements, so I thought it would be good to come here and register, and try to get oriented. As yet, I know nothing about Glx-dock, and little about Ubuntu (previously I used Fedora 6).

I'm using gnome-shell (in preference to unity) in Ubuntu. "cairo-dock -v" returns "3.0.0.0rc1".

Congratulations on a very stylish looking and (presumably) useful application!

Hello and welcome on GLX-Dock forums

It's a good idea to come here and register.
Don't hesitate to ask here any questions, to propose any ideas (or what you want) and to report bugs

the dock will work nicely with Gnome-Shell (well I guess, since I'm not using it), but you may want to replace the Gnome-Shell with a pure Cairo-Dock session (you can choose the type of session when you log in).

I noticed a couple of login options there, and I'll give them a try, soon. At the moment, I'm having trouble keeping Ubuntu 12.04 from crashing, without even trying Glx-Dock.

Hello Everybody,

I'm using Arch and I can install cairo-dock 3 from the AUR. I don't use gdm to login. When my machine starts, it goes to the text mode, I login in the text mode and run startx to go to gnome-shell. I want to replace gnome-shell with cairo-dock (i.e. when I startx, gnome-shell doesn't start and cairo-dock will do all the window managements) but don't know how. Is there any webpage that tells me how?

It's not the right place for this bug report but I'll quickly answer (please post new answer on a new topic).
First, did you compile the dock with this CMake flag: -Denable-desktop-manager=yes
If no, compile cairo-dock-core with this flag or go to this directory on the source code and read the CMakeLists.txt file to know where install each file: data/desktop-manager
Maybe it can be interesting to edit this file: cairo-dock.session
(e.g. you can remove this line: IsRunnableHelper ; and edit this line if you want to use another WM: DefaultProvider-windowmanager)

If you want to launch your Cairo-Dock session without GDM, you can launch your session with this command: gnome-session --session=cairo-dock

Does it work well?

(PS: note that you can also use Cairo-Dock with Compiz Standalone => https://launchpad.net/cairo-dock-session)
