Ubuntu 12.4 64 bit
Using opengl
Compiz (what comes standard)

Is vaapi being used for Sandy Bridge processors? If so, how could I tell or verify?
Thanks |

Vaapi is used to benefit from hardware movie decoder, so it will only be usefull to a video player.
Cairo-dock use OpenGL to get the best from hardware 3D acceleration.

Thanks for the info!

So does cairo-dock utilize the gpu at all or just the cpu? |

if you use the OpenGL mode, this will mostly depend on your video drivers. Consider that GPU should be used when available.
I guess such recent Intel hardware should have really decent 3D drivers, so would use the GPU acceleration when needed. |

So how could I verify that the gpu is being used? |

If you're using the OpenGL backend, you're using the GPU (except if your video card is too old but it's not the case here ) |
