I have the 2.2 dock version with OpenGL on Gnome fedora 14 with Compiz.

When I drag a file from Nautilus to the dock, the dock appears but the icons aren't animated as they normally are when hovering over them, so it doesn't seem it's possible to "select" the Drop and Share icon to drop the file over it. When I do drop the file over the still small icon, the file icon seems to return to Nautilus.

I have curl and wget installed.

How can I make it work?

do you have the same kind of problem if you try to add a launcher into the dock by dragging it from the Applications Menu ?
don't you have some animated arrow displayed on the dock, or an emblem, that would tell you when to drop the item ?
could you please try with Metacity ? (metacity --replace)

Using Metacity didn't change anything.

What do you mean adding from Applications Menu, I don't have Drop and share on the menus. What is the command for it? I'll add it and try to drag it to the dock.

The issue I have is dragging a file to be uploaded, here are screenshots of the normal behavior (the top one) where icons react to the mouse hover by changing in size, and the bottom one where the dock appears when I approach with a dragged file but the icons don't react.

What's your video card and its drivers? I think there was a problem with some ATI cards... a bug with Xorg and its drag'n drop support.

Actually it's Nvidia GeForce 7100 GS, but yes it does sound like a drag and drop problem in general. I can drag and drop files between panes of Nautilus, and between 2 Nautilus windows, but I couldn't for example drag a downloaded Firefox theme file and drop it into Addons window to install it.

Do you have any idea how I can test the drag and drop and see what might be the problem?

Can you drag a link (e.g. from Firefox), a file (e.g from Nautilus), a launcher (e.g. Firefox from Gnome-Menu), a text (from a text editor), etc. into a text editor?

Which drivers do you use?
glxinfo |grep OpenGL

Yes all of those drags (lol) work, I dropped them all into gedit and got the text from the files.

OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 7100 GS/PCI/SSE2
OpenGL version string: 2.1.2 NVIDIA 260.19.29
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20 NVIDIA via Cg compiler
OpenGL extensions:

I have the nvidia proprietary driver.

but the problem doesn't seem to be the reception of the drop, but more the activation of the drag inside the dock.
so it's more that the dock is not notified of the mouse-enter event if something is being dragged (and I think it reminds me a bug we had before but it was a long time ago).
if you drop the item on the dock (for example an item of the Gnome-Menu between 2 launchers), even if it's not "activated", does something appear ?

Hmm this is strange. I went to add digiKam to the dock by dragging it from the Applications > Graphics, and it went ok. The icons reacted, I could see an animation between the icons where to drop digikam, I dropped it and the digikam was added.

I then deleted digikam launcher and tried to add some other like gedit and screenruler, and digikam again, but this time it wouldn't work, the icons won't react, the dock just appears and then disapperas.

I restarted the dock but can't make the drop work again.

pretty strange, but if you restarted the dock and it still doesn't work, it's maybe a problem in the session.
what if you restart your session ?

I just restarted the dock, tried to drag a file to drag and drop icon and it worked, the icon had a small ! sign when I did this. But when I tried to paste the url I got the previous clipboard contents and not the link to the file.

When I tried to upload something else it wouldn't work.

I restarted the dock again and now it won't work, so it's not a case of working only once after it's started.

How do I restart a session? Simply log out?

yes, simply.
but then it means there is a bug somewhere in the Gnome session. if you can reproduce the case with another app than the dock, you could open a bug report on Gnome
about the URL, maybe it was copied in the mouse selection and not in the clipboard (there is an option for that in the applet); the mouse selection is what you get when you middle-click on a text zone.
