One of my distro installs is the Ubuntu Minimal CD with OpenBox as the WM instead of Gnome. I would like the Applications Menu applet to display the items in /usr/share/applications. Is this possible, or is there another way to have such a menu applet?
    • The version of Cairo-Dock: 2.2.0-4
    • Your GNU/Linux distribution: Ubuntu Maverick 10.04
    • Or you using OpenGL or not: Yes
    • Your Window manager: Compiz
    • Your Desktop Environment: OpenBox

It's not possible with GMenu (Applications Menu) applet. But as workaround, you can drag and drop this folder into the dock in order to add a Folder applet which will monitor this directory

the GMenu applet will display exactly the same thing as the Gnome menu would do. it's completely standard, so it should work on any environment if they respect the xdg norm. you should have a "applications.menu" file somewhere on your disk.

I guess OpenBox doesn't "respect the xdg norm" because there's no applications.menu file.

So I want to try the Folder approach, but I've hit a snag. I created a Folder applet for / so that I can open /usr and drag the applications folder to the dock to make an "applications" folder.

The / Folder applet displays the folders under it, but clicking on usr (or any others) causes icon response and some drive activity, but the clicked folder does not open.

trying to launch your program from /usr/bin is not the best solution I think
you'd better make launchers manually for the apps you use sometimes.
doesn't openbox have an application menu ?
