System tray applet does nothing

I don't know what to say or how to debug this. The system tray applet simply does not do anything. It also cannot be configured from the GUI (clicking on its icon does nothing). I can enable and disable the checkbox, but nothing shows up on or off the dock. I would really like to be able to use cairo-dock's system tray as AWN seems to be a bit of a memory hog, and is harder to configure...

I am not using gnome-panel, and have the default panel in /desktop/gnome/sessions as AWN right now (so that it's notification daemon shows up before other applications) - is there any way that could have an effect?

Hello,
The systray can only be placed outside the dock (it's not possible inside due to the wave and its zoom...).
You can move it with Alt + click or from the config panel (advanced mode). And you can only have one instance for one session. (so you have to disable the system tray of awn or something else)

yes, only 1 systray by X session is possible
by default it will be placed at the left-top corner of your desktop, and will stay above other windows.
you can move it wherever you want with alt+left-click.
hopefuly things should change in Ubuntu 10.10

I think perhaps you fail to understand what I am saying. I cannot move my systray applet with Alt-left-click, because there *is no systray applet* *anywhere on my desktop*.

Moreover, I cannot configure the systray applet - clicking on its icon in the configurator has no effect.

Click everywhere in the dock / Cairo-Dock / Settings (or Configure?) / Advanced mode / Systray / Desklet tab

no need to go to advanced mode by the way, in simple mode -> add-ons tab -> left-click on the applet -> configure
maybe the applet is on but empty (nothing in the systray), that's why you don't see it.

Simple mode for whatever reason is completely blank; I can only use advanced mode. Simple mode just is a gray box with three buttons - Advanced Mode, Apply, and Close.

As I have been trying to explain, I cannot configure systray; clicking on its icon from the top level of Advanced Mode has no effect, so I cannot modify the desklet settings from the GUI.

This bug has occurred on two separate computers, but they are both using the same imported theme (which I generated and saved). I have tried loading other themes though and it doesn't help. To experiment, how would I completely reset all cairo-dock configurations so that reinstalling cairo-dock would give me a completely fresh start? Is it all in .config/cairo-dock?

Huh, resetting all my configurations to default that way *did* fix my problem. Which makes me think there is a bug in exporting themes that perhaps causes unused applets to become unusable? Because I have had similar problems with other applets, it is just that systray is one I care about...

strange problem
which version do you use ?
maybe a right problem, you can try a "chmod -R 777 ~/.config/cairo-dock" and see if it makes things better
