Very Good Idea!
But gif has a patent if i'm right ... in opengl, i think, this is not the possiblity to animate directly the texture, we can only bind several image on the same texture (*) but like Fab said is very expensive for cpu see all the icons with this feature ... an idea could be animate the icon only when the mouse over it ... then an animation with the trigger cairo_dock_enter_icon .. in this way the icon bounce, rotate, spot, wobbly .... and it is also animated ...

(*) we can build a plugin through which a train load of textures is binded over the current object ... In this way you can see an animated icon ... am I wrong?

@ miousername: Thanks Google Translate ?
If you have some problem to read some topics or something else, don't be shy and tell us to make a little summary of it . The development of CD is not restricted to people who speak French !

BTW, yes, it can be interesting !

the Cairo-Penguin applet uses an image like a comics (several images placed next to each other, like a movie tape)
you bind the texture and only apply a portion of the texture
so it's not that difficult to do it, but it probably takes some time to make animated images this way.
alternatively one could load N images (say, image-1.png, image-2.png, etc) and bind 1 texture, or build a big texture to use the same trick as Cairo-Penguin.
even like that it probably takes some time to make a correct animation (minimum 6 frames I think), and I don't know any icons like that (forget animated gif, the quality is most of the time awful).

yes FaB,
i was watching how you realized Cairo Penguin ...i think it's possible to realize animation for one icon when we are over it but in my opinion the problem is another .... where do we find good icons animated?? i mean good image , good resolution and overall with good animation ... i think is the big problem .... it is very super cool into a plugin (coz weather plugin ) but for all icon of the main dock no ... if we had good image with good animation icons yes... I think that certainly it will the future of the dock generally but now this is my personal point of view

P.s. I'm waiting impatiently for the new weather applet of coz

I give you a hint

You could start with a CD spinning when listenning to music when no images were found in the music applet . I tried doing it with dbus and the CPU went mad. But i do not think you would need that much images because it s just an optical illusion and you just have to change the reflect in the icon

i like your idea taiebot65 ... i did an opengl experiment but it is heavy for cpu (I used some textures and i binded them into the current object) ... maybe i did some things wrong or some thing that i could to do better ..

@ DragonSama WooOw the site is full of gif but we can't use them ... we have to do animation in other way ...you have to try to read Fab's post
