Hi,
I have just discovered Cairo-Dock and think it's great. Unfortunately I can't run the OpenGL version as my poor old PC really struggles with it. Good excuse for a new PC I guess!
Anyway, I am using the 'Simple' clock theme and when I move the mouse pointer over it, it lights up and looks cool.
With my desktop theme the clock looks so much better when it is lit up, so I was wondering if there is a way to keep the light on permanently? |

Hi
when I move the mouse pointer over it, it lights up and looks cool. In fact, I think it's not a Cairo-Dock feature but an effect of your Window Manager (Compiz, Metacity, Kwin, ... ?). Is the clock applet in a desklet mode?
But it can be a simple and nice effect for the dock !!! (Fab ? )
I was wondering if there is a way to keep the light on permanently? There is a solution (yeah, you're on Linux ) :
- Install Inkscape :
sudo apt-get install inkscape
- Open this svg file with inkscape :
inkscape ~/.config/cairo-dock/extras/clock/Simple/clock-face.svg
- One left-click on the middle of the clock
- Maj+Ctrl+F to open a box in order to modify the background
- put the alpha (transparency) to 100% (or with the RGBA code ffffffff)
- Reload the dock :)

Isn't it the famous "halo" that everybody wanted to remove ?? |

this effect has been removed

you probably have quite an old version of Cairo-Dock. |

Thank you for the replies.
I am using version 2.0.9-karmic1 on Ubuntu 9.10. No OpenGL.
The clock applet is detached from the dock. Is that what you mean by desklet mode?
Sorry, I have no idea what you mean by "Compiz, Metacity, Kwin, ... ?" (I have only been using Linux for a week!)
Yes, there is a slight halo effect around the clock face, but I like it!
I will try your idea matttbe and let you know how I get on. Thanks. |

OK thanks.
This is the version from the Ubuntu Software centre. Obviously they are a little behind the times!
In any case, I'm afraid your idea did not work. It did alter the 'whiteness' of the clock face but it was not the same effect.
The effect is like a light behind the clock face, shining through it. I have a screen-shot but I have no idea how to upload it here. |

You just have to specify a picture in background for your detached clock -> In the config of the applet / Desklet / Decorations / Background_image |

anyway I can see what kind of effect it is, but most people didn't like it, so it has been removed |

OK, I have been playing around with radial gradients in Inkscape and have got pretty close to the desired effect (but without the halo). I am happy with the end result and have learnt lots of new things along the way.
Thank you for all your help. Keep up the good work! |
