hello
i am new to cairo-dock but already fully confused!
i tried to create a new dock as a sub-dock to detach it, which i find the most natural way of doing this. however, sub-docks can't be detached. they couldn't even be filled via drag and drop. however, this seems to be related to the names of the objects: names with spaces seem to be rejected. for example: "billiards" worked but "mine sweeper" not. then i created a "launcher" to "turn it into" a dock, which i find fully counterintuitive. however, the launcher appeared on top of the existing dock and was not draggable except to remove it entirely. dragging it like any other "applet" would be nice. i don't think that the special treatment of docks is justified. then i tried to right-click a new launcher, aehm, dock but the click went through it to a separator on the dock below it.
yet, it's really uneasy and unintuitive how docks and subdocks are created. please polish that.
many thanks,
dennis heuer
btw., the "detach" option could be rendered obsolete if dragging would rather detach instead of drop an object. dropping is something more critical and should better no be done so easily. also, one could allow dropping into the trashbin to ahve an undo-option at hand. |

i get more and more confused. first, i can't find an individual configuration dialog for a new dock. second, i moved the main dock to the right to get the new dock accessible. but that moved with it to the right. then i moved the main dock back. but the new dock stayed at the right!? however, the configuration dialog does not let me choose the dock i want to configure. if docks were really treated like launchers, they were easily detachable, and they had their own configuration.
there is another problem which possibly isn't but may be. i tried to delete the new dock, but only deleting the launchers worked. i am now not sure if there is an invisible rest (the container) left. i please you to take care that cairo-dock never leaves an invisible rest in any situation because the user doesn't recognize it, and cairo-dock clutters up by this over time without the user recognizing what the problem is.

though, interestingly, only the items with multiple words in their names are rejected when dropping them, the problem doesn't seem to be caused by their names. at least, renaming them doesn't solve the problem. but, possibly it's the commandlines in the desktop files because they are very long and slightly different for items with multiple words in their names. here are two examples:
[Desktop Entry]
Name=quad
Type=Application
Comment=Web Application
Exec="firefox" -app "/home/dennis/.mozilla/firefox/o5jip3dr.default/extensions/refractor@developer.mozilla.org/prism/application.ini" -override "/home/dennis/.webapps/quad@prism.app/override.ini" -webapp quad@prism.app
Icon=/home/dennis/.webapps/quad@prism.app/icons/default/webapp.png
[Desktop Entry]
Name=number place
Type=Application
Comment=Web Application
Exec="firefox" -app "/home/dennis/.mozilla/firefox/o5jip3dr.default/extensions/refractor@developer.mozilla.org/prism/application.ini" -override "/home/dennis/.webapps/number.place@prism.app/override.ini" -webapp number.place@prism.app
Icon=/home/dennis/.webapps/number.place@prism.app/icons/default/webapp.png

ah, it happened. i wondered about imbalanced space around a separator and found a mainly invisible (only recognizable via the few space it took) empty launcher i must have left while fiddling around. please make mainly invisible elements impossible.
thanks,

i can't find an individual configuration dialog for a new dock
accessible with a right click on the dock (for position)
to create several main docks, I recommend you to read the wiki (the complete tutorial), there is a pragraph dedicated to that.
I agree it is not very intuitive, but I didn't think of something better yet |

actually the separators around the launcher made the space and the launcher was this item i thought is a separator (horizontal small lines on an imaginary vertical line, looking like a stylish perforation or a slim crosswalk).

i first tried the multiple-docks-in-one-process strategy. now i tried the one-dock-per-process strategy, and it works semi-perfect:
first, i wanted to deactivate the taskbar but that is forbidden. one can only configure it down to do nothing, hopefully.
second, the new dock is named the same as the old dock, which can confuse at least in the config manager. the context menue should also show an individual name on top.
third, i'd like to put my docks below $HOME/.config/cairo-dock to not clutter up $HOME/.config. please consider a default module directory.
the rest seems to work.
many thanks,

i found out that applets get detached while launchers get dropped at dragging. this is not so intuitive for most users, i guess. also, detached launchers can imitate desktop icons.

you CAN deactivate the taskbar
drop launchers destroy them, as on MacOSX
having icons on the desktop has already been rejected a long time ago
I'll make things easier to create multiple main docks, however it does work with the method described in the complete tutorial of the wiki. |

héhé
by the way I've added a quick way to move a launcher/applet to another dock, even a new one.
so this "non intuitive feature" should be solved then |
