Cairo dock graphics are not very smooth in 1024x600 resolution if the dock is vertical.
See the screenshot below and compare the cairo-dock on the left and the gnome-panel on the right:

If the panel is horizontal, the dock looks much better.

This is not an issue with any specific theme, so far I have not found a single theme that looks nice in my setup.

I would be happy if you could tell me exactly what to change in the config to make things better. There are about gazillion different options but so far I have not found any that have effect on how the icons and graphics look.

OK u could play with the vue there is seven type different ... default 3d plane 3d curve slide rainbow parabolic carrousel

For a vertical dock i would recommand defaukt 3d plane and 3d curve...

Default only the wave effect in icon can be changed and the size of the dock by reducing the icons in the menu icon

3d plane you can change the wave effect in icon and the reflection and the size of the dock by reducing the icons in the menu icon.
you can change as well the dock in dock rendering

The same for curve but you can play with the curve effect...

I think it's a resize problem (in vertical, there is not enough space, so the dock resize the icons)
does it happen with cairo-dock -c ?

anyway, you can change the icon size to something smaller (like 36x36 or even smaller), so that the dock wont resize them.

Yes, the problem is still present in the latest cairo-dock version and also using it with the -c option. Changing the icon sizes does not really solve the issue, the icons at rest still look horrible (jagged, not smooth) compared to normal gnome icons. And some icons become practically unusable if so small (xchat for example is just a black+red blur at 32x32). When I hover over the icons and they get enlarged, they're really much better looking.

As for comparison, my normal gnome-panel width is 24 pixels and the icons are crisp and clean at that size.

it's a scale problem, but I'm surprised that cairo doesn't do the job correctly.
maybe by forcing the dock to take its icons in the 24x24 section of the icons theme ?
