I started a thread with this problem yesterday, as a guest, but I'd say the thread has been deleted for some reason... Well, now I'm a registered user
My problem is that I lost the applets and plug-ins of the dock after upgrading from Ubuntu Hardy Heron to Intrepid. I've followed the instructions given here http://www.glx-dock.org/ww_page.php?p=Par%20d%C3%A9p%C3%B4t?=fr#0-Ubuntu and the installation was successful, but the list of applets in the configuration manager of Cairo-Dock is empty (I miss my clock and my weather forecast!). When I try to upgrade the plug-ins:
sudo apt-get install cairo-dock cairo-dock-plug-ins

the answer is
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
cairo-dock is already the newest version.
Package cairo-dock-plug-ins is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package cairo-dock-plug-ins has no installation candidate

Any idea of what might go wrong? FYI, my repository is http://repository.glx-dock.org/ubuntu

Thanks in advance!

[I edited a couple of typos]

I think you have to remove every old cairo-dock package before installing the new one. Did you do that?

The command :

sudo apt-get remove --purge cairo-dock*

I did that, but no result... I can install the cairo-dock, but keeps telling me that the plug-ins package is not available...

Please paste your /etc/apt/sources.list.

And do you have 32 or 64bit? (New dual core processors eg are 64bit.)

Another thing you could try is use the debs posted by spark here: http://www.glx-dock.org/bg_topic.php?t=2133

I'm going to try with the links posted by sp@rks and keep you informed...

[Edit] I'm not sure how I'm supposed to do it. I cannot add one of his links into the "Third party sofware" in the "Software sources". I can only do it editing the sources.list file? Or am I supposed to do something els?

You have to download the debs onto your desktop and then click them (should take you to the package manager).

I installed the package with the plug-ins, but still nothing under applets in my dock...

Well, but from what you say it seems that it at least installed this time.

Hmm, I really don't know, this never happened to me. Another radical idea would be to delete everything concerning cairo-dock, including

~/.cairo-dock
~/.config/cairo-dock

and try to "locate" other things. Then when you purged everything, reboot and install again from the debs. But I'm a bit stumped here, if cairo-dock-plugins installs then you should see the applets automatically.

Just had another idea, what is the output of "aptitude search cairo-dock", mine is:

> aptitude search cairo-dock
i cairo-dock - A wonderful dock for UNIX users (KDE and G
pi cairo-dock-data - Common files for cairo-dock
p cairo-dock-dev - Development files for cairo-dock
c cairo-dock-plug-ins - A collection of official plug-ins and appl
i cairo-dock-plugins - The plugins package for cairo-dock
i cairo-dock-themes - Themes package for Cairo-dock

that means you also should have cairo-dock-data and cairo-dock-themes...

This is the output:

i cairo-dock - <insert up to 60 chars description>
p cairo-dock-data - Common files for cairo-dock
p cairo-dock-dev - Development files for cairo-dock
i cairo-dock-plugins - The plugins package for cairo-dock

I might be missing the themes? If so, where could I get them?

I got them from the repo. Hmm, but I wonder if that's the reason you're not seeing the applets.

By the way, correction: you should not have cairo-dock-data installed. That's from the old version 1.6.2.3 and is what is causing all these problems.

And me again, you seem to have cairo-dock from the repo and cairo-dock-plugins from the spark-debs (60 chars description... is from the repo). Maybe try both from the debs? And purge everything before you reinstall.

If I remember correctly, I have cairo-dock, cairo-dock-plugins from the debs and cairo-dock-themes from the repo.

Hmm, I guess it's not a good idea to remove your whole usr/local/share, but you could try to remove the cairo-dock subdirectories (use sudo cause it's in the root file system): here is how it looks on my machine

They seem to contain information about the applets so try to delete these two directories and do another reinstall.

This is weird...
I went to look at my /usr/local, but did not find any cairo-dock folder
:/usr/local/share$ ls
applications emacs games man octave sgml
desktop-directories fonts icons mime ppd xml

So I reinstalled the dock again and got the plug-ins from the debian package. Same result, no applets. I typed then
sudo apt-get remove --purge cairo-dock*

and again

Did you try

> ls -a ../../../../usr/local/share

Maybe it's called .cairo-dock?

Guest, Tuesday 27 January 2009 à 15:52

Euh.... Have you tried sudo apt-get install cairo-dock-plugins instead of sudo apt-get install cairo-dock-plug-ins
